Washington, D.C. – President Donald Trump held a moment of silence during a White House press briefing on Thursday to honor the victims of a devastating mid-air collision between a military helicopter and a passenger plane over the Potomac River.
“Sadly, there are no survivors,” Trump announced solemnly, calling the tragedy an “hour of anguish” for the nation. The president described the incident as “a dark and excruciating night in our nation’s capital and in our nation’s history.”

The Tragic Collision
The crash involved American Eagle Flight 5342, which had departed from Wichita, Kansas, carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, and an Army Black Hawk helicopter transporting three soldiers. The collision occurred near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on what Trump described as “a very clear night.”

President Trump assured the victims’ families that his administration was committed to finding the cause of the disaster. “We do not know what led to this crash, but we have some very strong opinions and ideas. We’ll find out how this disaster occurred and ensure that nothing like this ever happens again,” he stated.
Trump also announced the immediate appointment of Christopher Rocheleau as acting commissioner of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to oversee the investigation and improve air safety measures.

Government Response
Newly sworn-in Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy joined Trump at the briefing, outlining a “whole-of-government response” to the incident. He pledged a swift and thorough investigation, stating, “We will get to the bottom of this—not in three years, not in four years, but as quickly as possible.”
Duffy emphasized the importance of airline safety, adding, “When Americans take off in airplanes, they should expect to land at their destination.”
Political Response

During his remarks, President Trump criticized past administrations for their handling of aviation safety, stating, “I put safety first. Obama, Biden, and the Democrats put policy first.” He also questioned why “adjustments weren’t made” despite the favorable weather conditions at the time of the crash.
As recovery efforts continue, authorities are working to gather evidence and provide answers to grieving families. The tragedy has once again raised concerns about aviation safety and airspace management near the nation’s capital.
More updates to follow as the investigation progresses.
