America-Colombia Relations: The U.S. imposed several sanctions against Colombia, prompting President Petro to retaliate by announcing a 25% tariff on the U.S.
America-Colombia Sanction: After becoming the President of the United States, Donald Trump began taking action against illegal immigrants. Trump deported Colombian citizens living in the U.S. by filling two planes and sending them back to Colombia. However, Colombia refused to allow these planes to land, which angered President Trump. In response, he imposed several sanctions on Colombia. Showing defiance, Colombia retaliated by announcing a 25% tariff against the United States.
Trump, upset over Colombia’s refusal to allow U.S. planes to land, ordered the cancellation of visas for Colombian officials and imposed an immediate travel ban. Additionally, visa restrictions were placed on members and supporters of Colombia’s ruling party. Following this action, Trump stated, “This is just the beginning. We will not tolerate the Colombian government’s violation of rules.” He also announced that tariffs, currently at 25%, would be raised to 50% starting next week.
Colombia agrees to take back its citizens
After Trump’s decisive measures, the President of Colombia agreed to repatriate illegal Colombian citizens. He ordered a government aircraft to bring back these citizens from the U.S. and issued instructions for their return. In response, Colombia imposed its own sanctions on the U.S.
“U.S. cannot treat Colombian migrants like criminals,” says Petro
