JPC Report: Today marked the last day of the first phase of the Budget session of Parliament, but this session too was marred by heavy uproar. BJP MP Medha Kulkarni presented the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) report on the Waqf Bill in the Rajya Sabha, following which opposition parties strongly reacted. The opposition alleges that their disagreements were deliberately omitted from the report, making it entirely unconstitutional.
Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, expressed strong displeasure over the JPC report. He stated that the report was prepared by sidelining the opposition’s objections, which he described as a violation of parliamentary procedures. Kharge termed the report as “fake” and demanded that it be presented again. He accused the government of suppressing the opposition’s voice and intentionally removing their dissent notes.
MPs Split Over the JPC Report
On January 30, the JPC submitted a 655-page draft report to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Sixteen members agreed to the report, while eleven members opposed it. Opposition MPs argue that several significant objections were not included in the report, raising doubts about its impartiality. They are calling it against parliamentary procedures and demanding that a revised report be presented.
Opposition Uproar in the Lok Sabha
Opposition parties also caused a ruckus in the Lok Sabha over this issue. Due to the protests, the proceedings in the Lok Sabha lasted only a few minutes before being adjourned until 2 PM. The opposition made it clear that they would raise this issue again in the next phase of Parliament and demand a response from the government. Meanwhile, the government has stated that the report was prepared in a fully transparent manner, adhering to parliamentary rules.
