In this match, Gujarat defeated Saurashtra and secured a place in the semi-finals. Following Saurashtra’s defeat, the powerful batsman Sheldon Jackson decided to retire from cricket.
Retirement after the loss
On February 11, after his team’s loss to Gujarat in the Ranji Trophy quarter-final, Sheldon Jackson bid farewell to his 15-year-long professional cricket career. The 38-year-old batsman played 105 first-class matches, accumulating over 7,200 runs, with 21 centuries and 39 half-centuries. His best score was 186 runs. Jackson ended his career with an average of over 45, and was known not only as a reliable batsman but also a brilliant fielder. He also performed wicket-keeping duties for Saurashtra in limited-overs cricket. In his last match against Gujarat, he scored 14 and 27 runs.
Never got a chance in the Indian team
Jackson began his first-class career with Saurashtra in 2011. His outstanding performances helped Saurashtra reach the Ranji Trophy final for the first time in the 2012-13 season. Thanks to his excellent performances in domestic cricket, Jackson was selected for the India A team for the West Indies tour. He played a key role in helping Saurashtra win the Ranji Trophy in the 2015-16 season. Jackson had already bid farewell to limited-overs cricket last month. He scored 2,792 runs in 84 List A innings. Despite his long first-class career, Sheldon Jackson remained one of the unlucky cricketers who never got the chance to play for the Indian national team.
