Kannada film actress Ranya Rao’s gold smuggling case has revealed new information. Reports indicate that she smuggled over 10 kg of gold into India by concealing it on her body. On Thursday, she was presented in court, where the judge reserved the decision on her bail plea. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) emphasized the case’s implications for national security and sought her custody.
First Statement Released
According to reports, Rao admitted to possessing 17 gold bars. Additionally, she had traveled to Dubai, Europe, the U.S., and Middle Eastern countries. It is believed that she earned approximately ₹12 lakh per trip, though her actual income has not been officially confirmed.

As per an India Today report, she stated, “I have traveled to Europe, the U.S., the Middle East, and Dubai. I want to clarify that I am exhausted as I haven’t had enough rest.” She also assured full cooperation with the authorities.
According to reports, Rao told the DRI, “I have nothing to say. Once again, I assure you that I will fully cooperate with the investigation and appear whenever summoned. During this statement recording, no religious sentiments were hurt. I was provided food and water periodically, but I chose not to eat as I wasn’t feeling hungry, though I did drink water.”
Gold Concealed on Her Thighs
Initial reports suggested that Rao smuggled gold using a jacket. However, the DRI later revealed that physical inspection led to the discovery of 14.2 kg of gold hidden on her body. Rao had arrived from Dubai on March 3.
As per The Indian Express, sources disclosed that the 31-year-old actress allegedly taped and bandaged 14 gold bars to her thighs to evade customs detection. She reportedly carried 14 gold bars, each weighing 1 kg, securely taped to her thighs and concealed them by wearing pants.
How She Evaded Authorities
Reports suggest that Rao allegedly used VIP channels at Bengaluru airport to avoid scrutiny upon returning from international trips. A protocol officer ensured her smooth exit without thorough checks. Allegedly, she also used police escorts multiple times to bypass security screenings. On Monday, she attempted a similar tactic with a police constable but was caught red-handed by the DRI with the smuggled gold. Following her arrest, she was taken to the DRI office in Nagawara for questioning.
The Multi-Crore Operation
The 14.2 kg of gold seized from Rao at Kempegowda International Airport was estimated to be worth ₹12.56 crore. Following her airport detention, officials raided her residence, seizing gold jewelry worth ₹2.06 crore and ₹2.67 crore in cash.
