Senior Congress leader and Member of Parliament from Thiruvananthapuram, Shashi Tharoor, has openly expressed his growing dissatisfaction with the party leadership. Recently, he complained about being sidelined within the Congress and even stated that if the party does not need him, he has other options available. Tharoor’s remarks have stirred political circles, sparking speculation about his future.
Tharoor’s Aspiration to Become CM
A four-time Congress MP, Shashi Tharoor, recently raised concerns about the lack of leadership within the Kerala Congress. He also met with the party high command to discuss his role, further fueling speculation that he might distance himself from the party. However, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee President K. Sudhakaran dismissed such possibilities, asserting that Tharoor would neither leave the party nor join the CPM.
Tharoor has also made it clear that if Congress comes to power in the next assembly elections, he will be in the race for the Chief Minister’s post. He claims that various surveys have shown him as the most popular Congress leader in Kerala. His statement has put the state Congress leadership in an uncomfortable position.

Discontent in Congress Over Tharoor
Reacting to Shashi Tharoor’s statements, K. Sudhakaran warned him that expressing opinions in the media outside the party line is not the right approach. Sudhakaran said, “Tharoor still has time to correct his mistakes. Making statements against the party through the media was unfortunate. No one should cross their limits.”
Meanwhile, Congress Working Committee member Ramesh Chennithala highlighted the responsibilities given to Tharoor, emphasizing that the party has always entrusted him with key roles. Chennithala stated, “Congress needs Tharoor; that is why he was elected as an MP four times, given a Union Minister position, and included in the party’s top bodies.”
Is Tharoor Losing Faith in Congress?
Tharoor’s recent statements suggest that his disillusionment with Congress may be growing. His demand for a more prominent national role and his aspiration to become Chief Minister have stirred internal debates within the party. Senior Congress leader K. Muraleedharan said that Tharoor should be given the responsibility of attracting young voters at the national level, while local party leaders in Kerala focus on strengthening the organization.
However, following Tharoor’s remarks about exploring alternatives, questions have arisen about whether he is considering a new political path or simply pressuring Congress leadership to grant him a more significant role. It will be interesting to see how the Congress high command handles the situation in the coming days and what Tharoor decides as his next move.
