Former President Pranab Mukherjee’s son and former Member of Parliament Abhijeet Mukherjee rejoined the Congress Party after spending four years with the Trinamool Congress. On Wednesday, Abhijeet Mukherjee officially returned to Congress at the state headquarters in West Bengal, in the presence of the party’s state unit observer, Ghulam Ahmed Mir. During the event, the 65-year-old Abhijeet expressed his regret over leaving Congress, stating that it was a mistake.
Abhijeet had joined Mamata Banerjee’s party, the Trinamool Congress, after the results of the 2021 Bengal elections. After rejoining Congress, he said, “A Congress person will naturally return to Congress. I want to admit that I made a mistake. I regret leaving Congress.” He further stated, “Congress does not have a single seat in Bengal, but that doesn’t matter. If we can turn zero into one, it will be an achievement for us.”
Talking about his political journey, Abhijeet Mukherjee worked with several corporate firms before entering politics. He was elected as a Member of Parliament from Jangipur, Bengal, in 2012 after his father Pranab Mukherjee became President. He was re-elected in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. However, in the 2019 elections, he lost to Khalilur Rahman of the Trinamool Congress. After the 2021 Bengal elections, Abhijeet Mukherjee joined the Trinamool Congress.
“Mamata Banerjee Says Congress is Not Needed”
Abhijeet Mukherjee, who joined the Trinamool Congress in 2021, could help Congress regain its lost prestige in West Bengal. For the Congress party, he represents the legacy of former President Pranab Mukherjee, who was a prominent leader of the party. Political experts suggest that Abhijeet Mukherjee’s return to Congress could be a blow to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Mamata Banerjee recently stated that she does not need Congress to defeat the BJP in Bengal.
