There has been a strong reaction from the Arab world regarding U.S. President Donald Trump’s Gaza plan. The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, and Jordan’s King Abdullah II have strongly rejected the plan. Aboul Gheit stated at the World Government Summit in Dubai that displacing Palestinians from Gaza and the West Bank is unacceptable to the Arab world. He said, “The Arab world has been fighting against this idea for the last 100 years.” In this context, King Abdullah II also made it clear during a meeting with Trump that Jordan would not accept any attempts to displace Palestinians. However, on humanitarian grounds, he offered to grant asylum to 2,000 sick children from Gaza.
Trump’s Gaza Plan Stirs Controversy His statement came at a time when Donald Trump had recently proposed that the U.S. could take control of Gaza and develop it into a major tourist destination. Arab nations believe that this plan is based on displacing Palestinians from their land, which they have completely rejected. During a meeting with King Abdullah of Jordan, Trump said, “We will take control of Gaza and preserve it.” However, he also made it clear that he would not personally engage in any real estate projects there.
King Abdullah tried to convince Trump, saying that Egypt is preparing a comprehensive plan on this issue, which will be discussed further. He said, “We should wait to see what proposal Egypt brings forward, and then we will discuss it in Riyadh.” Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi also supported the reconstruction of Gaza but firmly rejected the displacement of Palestinians.
Will Trump Pressure Jordan? Jordan receives about $750 million in economic aid and $350 million in military assistance from the U.S. annually. It is reported that Trump may try to pressure Jordan and other Arab countries by threatening to withhold this aid. However, King Abdullah signaled that his country’s position would remain firm. All eyes are now on the upcoming Riyadh meeting, where Arab countries will decide their collective strategy regarding Trump’s controversial proposal.
