The anti-Sikh riots in Delhi erupted on a large scale following the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, during which many people were killed. On November 1, 1984, a father and son were brutally murdered in the Saraswati Vihar area. On Wednesday, Special Judge Kaaveri Baveja at Rouse Avenue Court convicted Sajjan Kumar. At the time of the verdict, Sajjan Kumar was present in the court. He has been in jail for the past 6 years and was brought to court from prison. The sentence will be decided after the debate on February 18.
In this riot that took place 41 years ago, Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh were mercilessly killed. Initially, the case was registered at the Punjabi Bagh police station and later handed over to the SIT. The court had framed charges against Sajjan Kumar on December 16, 2021, finding him prima facie guilty.
According to the prosecution, after the assassination of Indira Gandhi, a mob, armed with deadly weapons, looted and set fire to properties on a large scale to take ‘revenge’ on Sikhs. The mob went to the complainant’s house, looted it, killed her husband and son, and then set the house on fire. The court found that Sajjan Kumar was not only involved in the violence but was also leading the mob.
