The bus, carrying over 70 passengers, reportedly collided with a railing before plunging into a contaminated river. According to Guatemala’s Municipal Fire Department, rescue teams have recovered 51 bodies from the wreckage so far. Victor Gómez, a spokesperson for a volunteer firefighter group, confirmed that all the bodies have been sent to a temporary morgue. At least 10 injured survivors have been rescued.

Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo expressed deep sorrow over the accident, calling it a dark day for the nation. In response, the government has declared a national mourning period to honor the victims.

According to the fire department, the bus driver lost control, causing the vehicle to hit several smaller vehicles before crashing into a 65-foot-deep ravine.
