Shah Rukh Khan’s film Ra.One was released in 2011. Despite mixed reviews from audiences, the film proved to be a hit at the box office. Over time, it has gained popularity and even become a part of meme culture. Many times on social media, questions have been raised about one particular scene from the film, and people have also questioned the director’s understanding of it. Now, the film’s director, Anubhav Sinha, has addressed the issue.
Which scene is being discussed?
In the film, there’s a scene where Shah Rukh Khan’s character dies in London. Afterward, Kareena Kapoor’s character returns to India. When Shah Rukh’s character dies, his body is placed in a coffin. In a later scene, Kareena is shown immersing his ashes in the river.
What were the questions about the scene?
On social media, people raised questions about this scene. They asked, “If Shah Rukh’s character was placed in a coffin and buried, then whose ashes is Kareena immersing?” This led to jokes about the director’s understanding. Anubhav Sinha has now explained why this happened in the film.
Anubhav admits a mistake
In an exclusive interview with The Lallantop, Anubhav Sinha talked about the scene and admitted his mistake. He said, “I made a mistake in that scene. What I did was, when a person dies in London, their body doesn’t go onto a bamboo stretcher. This concept exists in India, which is why I showed him in a coffin. Because of this, people assumed that Shah Rukh’s character must have been buried.”
Director clarifies
He further explained, “I’m from Banaras. I know that Shah Rukh’s character is a Tamil Brahmin, and Tamil Brahmins don’t get buried. Sometimes, instead of doubting the director, you should doubt yourself. If I had buried him and then shown his ashes being immersed, I wouldn’t be that foolish. If you watch the scene carefully, you’d understand it.”
Anubhav explains the entire scene
Anubhav Sinha went on to explain that after the viral scene, there was a small short film in which the coffin was removed. This was done because, according to his vision, Shah Rukh’s body was sent to an electric furnace. Afterward, Kareena is shown crying, with steam rising, indicating that Shah Rukh’s character was being cremated. The immersion scene followed. Anubhav stated that he had intended for the scene to be understood this way, but it didn’t reach the audience as intended.
