Why BJP’s Victory in Delhi is Significant?
In its first election in 2013, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won 31 seats but fell short of forming a government. However, with Congress’s support, Arvind Kejriwal became Delhi’s Chief Minister for the first time. In the 2015 elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was reduced to just three seats, while in the 2020 elections, it managed to increase its tally to eight.
AAP, which entered politics with promises of alternative and honest governance while vowing to fight corruption, faced several allegations before this election. Many of its leaders were also sent to jail. The BJP made alleged corruption in the liquor policy scandal and the so-called ‘Sheesh Mahal’ controversy key election issues. Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched multiple attacks on AAP over these matters during his campaign.
Why is BJP’s Win Important?
After its victories in Haryana and Maharashtra, BJP’s win in Delhi holds significant political importance. While AAP promoted its “Kejriwal Model” of development, BJP countered with the “Modi Model.” The BJP’s election manifesto promised to continue AAP’s welfare schemes such as free electricity and water while introducing new benefits, including a ₹2,500 monthly allowance for women and free medical treatment up to ₹10 lakh.
With this victory, BJP has not only strengthened its presence in Delhi but also sent a strong message ahead of upcoming elections.
