A powerful earthquake struck North America on Saturday, with tremors strongly felt in the region. According to the German Research Center, the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.89, with its epicenter located at a depth of 10 kilometers. Following the quake, the U.S. Tsunami Warning System issued an alert, warning of a potential tsunami threat for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
Meanwhile, the USGS reported the earthquake’s magnitude as 7.6, with the same depth of 10 kilometers. This has raised concerns about a possible tsunami in the Caribbean Sea. The tremors were felt in several countries along the Caribbean coastline, including Mexico, Cuba, Honduras, Belize, and Haiti, causing panic among residents.
The tsunami threat extends to Belize, the Bahamas, and Haiti as well. However, the U.S. Tsunami Warning Center has stated that there is no threat to the U.S., though people are advised to remain cautious. According to agency reports, the earthquake struck at approximately 6:25 PM IST, with its epicenter located 130 miles from George Town in the Cayman Islands. So far, no reports of damage have emerged.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has also issued a tsunami warning. Similarly, Greece experienced a 5.2-magnitude earthquake on the island of Santorini. Greece has seen multiple earthquakes in recent days, with seven tremors recorded on Thursday morning alone. Due to the frequent seismic activity, the Greek government has declared a state of emergency until March 3. Additionally, Israel has issued a tsunami alert for its coastal areas, as the earthquake’s epicenter was located approximately 900 kilometers away.
